Did you know..history of the earth
Something new for fridays, a sharing of something I read recently that I thought was pretty interesting. Todays entry has to do with the very earth we live on. As far as scientists can tell, the earth is 4.5 billion years old, and if you were to compact the time of the earth into a single 24 hour day, it would look something like this:
From 12:00 AM to 4AM the earth is nothing but a cooling mass of rock and noxious gases.
04:00 AM the first single celled life form appears and little changes for 16 hours.
08:30 PM sea plants show up
08:50 PM the first complex organisms (jellyfish) appear.
09:04 PM Trilobytes (kind of like snails) appear on the scene
09:55 PM the first land plants appear
10:00 PM the land plants are joined by the first air breathing land-dwelling animals
10:25 PM our quickly developing land masses are covered by carboniferous forests
10:30 PM winged insects fly into the scene
11:00 PM the age of the dinosaurs begins
11:40 PM the age of the dinosaurs ends
11:59 PM humans appear
All during this time, all of the land masses are moving around colliding into each other, mountains pop-up and fall, glaciers scour the surface, and every 4 minutes (on average) the earth is hit with a meteor averaging 1/4 mile (4/10 km) across. The average temperature of earth will fluctuate 50 degrees (C) between monstrous ice ages and periods of tropical paradise. Which is why 99.999% of every thing that has ever existed on this planet is now extinct. Our timer is running.
