My new YAHOO YUI Wordpress theme

Monday, February 5th, 2007

I just finished a new theme for my Wordpress blog that uses alot of the YUI libraries. The theme uses the Animation, Connection Manager, Container, DOM, Event, Tabview, Treeview, CSS Grid Layouts, and the CSS Reset libraries. Total development time, about 16 hours.

First, a hat’s off to the YUI and Wordpress teams who […]

Sharepoint from the Domino Developer perspective : Part 2

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

After a week of nose down development in the Sharepoint 2007 environment, I came away with a greater appreciation for how similar Domino and Sharepoint are in their mechanics, and a certain fondness of the simplicity behind the facade of Sharepoint complexity.

As I mentioned in a previous article, the Sharepoint lists, views, and document libraries […]

The YUI Panel Bug is squashed

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Hats off to the YUI team for that a fast turnaround. As I had reported in this post, the YUI panel class would sometimes not allow a user to click the drop-down arrow in a select box in Firefox. With the release of YUI 0.12.2, that bug has been squashed. How about that […]

Beware the Hard-Coded YUI Calendar Images

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

If you use the YUI calendar object, you may want to know that the URL’s for some of the images that are used are hard coded!! A big thanks to Firebug for making it easy to track that down, and for someone at Yahoo who added a configuration variable that makes the solution alot […]

A review of the YUI libraries in a production application

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

With the successful launch of a benefits enrollment application at my office, I wanted to put some thoughts down on the use of the Yahoo User Interface javascript libraries in that application. All in all, the libraries were excellent, except for two bugs which remind me of the value of writing your own libraries.

The primary […]

Give your users all the help (F1) they need!

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Many applications we use every day us the F1 key to access the online help for that application. Many applications provide methods to override the default help prompt with your own, including browsers. So whay not provide our users with online help in a consistent method? Here is a (so far) cross browser […]

Sharepoint from the Domino Developer perspective : Part 1

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

What is Sharepoint? Alot more than I thought when I started down the path of learning about Sharepoint products in support of our enterprise content management project. There is alot to learn, so I’ll only be scratching the surface but I wanted to try and show what this product is all about while avoiding the […]

AJAX app to test the performance of your AJAX apps

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Ever wondered how your AJAX applications would perform under a load test, but can’t/won’t buy an expensive load testing tool? I got tired of wondering so I figured out how I could create an AJAX application to test my AJAX applications. Nothing professional grade, but it can answer some of my performance questions. […]

A Web 2.0 search using YUI

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

I have always felt that the default Wordpress search was enemic and inaccurate at best, so I finally got around to changing the default search, and returning the results in a more “Web 2.0″ fashion. It could be easily adapted to any blog template since it only requires some YUI includes and a single […]

An incredible JS library for Web 2.0 layouts

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Jack Slocum is fast approaching deity status with this last project. He has created a YUI extension library for some kick-butt Web 2.0 layouts. The toolkit allows you to create collapsible sections, multiple (even nested) splitter bars, even automatic content tabs when you place two divs on top of each other. This […]
